Possessive pronouns in the a category correspond to the 11 personal pronouns. The forms are tāku, tāu, tāna, tā tāua, tā māua, tā kōrua, tā rāua, tā tātou, tā mātou, tā koutou, tā rātou. They indicate possession of a-category items such as food, work, pets, or created things, matching the person or group involved.

 

 

 

 

 

Now, there are 11 personal pronouns in te reo Maori

And each of these has a possessive form

so, in the a category

tāku is my

He pango tāku waea

My phone is black

 

tāu is yours

Kei te auau tāu kurī

Your dog is barking

 

tāna is his or her

He tino reka tāna kai

Her food is delicious

 

When we are talking about things owned by two people we have

 

tā taua - belonging to you and me

Kua kai ia i tā tāua kai.

He ate the food that belongs to you and me.

 

Tā māua - belong to us two not you

Kei te moe tā māua ngeru

Our cat - belong to the two us but not you, is sleeping

 

Tā kōrua - belonging to the two of you, not me

He tino nui tā kōrua tēpu

Your table, belonging to the to of you, is big

 

Tā rāua - belonging to those two, not me and not you

Ka kai ahau i tā rāua keke

I will eat the cake that belongs to those two

And keke not kēkē (whic is underarm)

 

And, in the plural, we have

Tā tātou - belong to all of us

He pai tā tātou huii

Our meeting is good

 

Tā mātou - belonging to us but not you

He whero tā mātou tōmato

Our tomator is red (its not your tomaoto)

 

Tā koutou - belonging to all of you and not me

Ka pānui au i tā koutou pukapuka

I will read your book that belongs to you all

 

and tā rātou - belonging to them

Kua matakitaki tātou i tā rātou kiriata

We have watched their movie

That's the possessive personal pronouns for the ā category.
